Safety Seminar: Dial Before You Dig

On the 28th of August 2019, we were fortunate enough to have Adrian Wellington from Dial Before You Dig speak at our Safety Seminar Breakfast.

Dial Before You Dig is a FREE national referral service, providing information on relevant infrastructure to reduce damage and disruption while excavating on any project. Protecting services such as electricity, gas, water and telecommunication and ensuring the safety of everyone involved has always been the number one priority for Dial Before You Dig since its inception in 1984.

The not for profit began when a dozer ploughing cable hit a 200mm gas main, causing a large fireball. There was significant damage to the bulldozer, ripper, rail tracks, high tension electric towers, the gas pipeline and other infrastructures nearby.  At this point they realized something needed to be done.

So, how does it actually work?

  1. You submit a FREE enquiry
  2. The enquiry is submitted to the DBYD system and registered Members are notified
  3. Registered members respond directly to the enquiry
  4. You receive an enquiry response directly from our Members

It’s that easy! All you need to do is fill in a form and make a cup of tea while you wait for the response.

You can either submit a request by downloading the app, or on the mobile web service.

But what if you’ve already obtained a plan for your project? Well…that doesn’t necessarily cover all of your bases – for example, ENERGEX do not show the presence of any overhead networks. Dial Before You Dig Certified Locators can trace assets that are not always shown on member’s plans. Things like:

  • Domestic lead-ins (gas, power crossing street)
  • Electrical equipment on footpaths
  • Electrical earthing oil filled tanks
  • Traffic lights
  • Security cameras
  • BBQs in parks
  • Stuff on private property

Adrian also spoke about the legal obligations you should consider when breaking the ground. Things like your ‘Duty of Care’ not to damage other people’s assets (or obviously other people), damage cost recovery and injury to people.

A huge thanks to Adrian for presenting, and everyone who came along to make the event such a success.
